Workshop “International Year of Nursing and Midwifery”
In 2020, WHO was selected as the “International Year of Nursing and Midwifery” to honor the contribution of nursing and midwifery to achieving the millennium goals.
On May 27, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Nursing Association, the Vietnam Health Trade Union, the Vietnam Midwives Association in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Vietnam held a communication seminar on the response to the “Nursing Now” campaign launched by WHO and the World Council of Nursing (ICN).
The year 2020 has been chosen by WHO as the International Year of Nursing and Midwifery to honor the great contributions of nurses and midwives to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. At the same time, the “Nursing Now Campaign” was launched to attract the attention of national and world leaders about the vocation and essential role of nurses and midwives in maintaining health a healthy world.
Dr. Kidong Park, WHO Representative in Vietnam, said that WHO is calling on member countries to increase investment in training of nurses and midwives; increase investment to create more good job opportunities for nurses and midwives; increased investment to strengthen leadership roles for nurses and midwives.
With nearly 28 million nurses and midwives globally in general and nearly 140,000 nurses and midwives in Vietnam, nurses and midwives account for nearly 50% of the health workforce, providing the most and most frequent services. and most continuous. Therefore, there will be no effective national health program without maximizing the potential of nurses and midwives.
In 2020, the international year of nurses and midwives, WHO recommends that leaders invest in 3 areas of nurses and midwives: Training, employing and increasing their participation in nursing care health policy making.
In Vietnam, a network of nurses and midwives has been established widely from urban to rural areas. That shows the great need and role of nurses and midwives in the care and protection of people’s health, especially primary health care and maternal and children care are growing.
On 27/5, in Hanoi, Vietnam Nurses Association, Vietnam Medical Union, Vietnam Association of Midwifery in collaboration with the World Health Organization Office in Vietnam held a Media Conference “Five International Nursing and Midwifery” and responds to the” Nursing Now “Campaign (Nursing Now).
