CONFERENCE CONTENT
The conference was attended by Colonel Nguyen Hanh Phuc, Permanent Deputy General Director of the Vietnam National Mine Action Center, and Mr. Prum Sunonpraseth, Executive Director of ARMAC, who co-chaired the conference.
Speaking to welcome the conference, Colonel Nguyen Hanh Phuc said that Vietnam is one of the countries heavily affected by landmines left behind by war. During decades of war, Vietnam has suffered millions of tons of bombs and bullets, killing more than 4 million people and injuring more than 60,000 people for life. Landmines not only pose dangers to people’s lives but also have a negative impact on the country’s socio-economic development.
Currently, Vietnam still has many lucky people who survived landmine explosions, but they face many difficulties in accessing social life. Therefore, it is a very meaningful, practical and humane activity for countries, international organizations and donors to join hands to support victims and overcome the humanitarian consequences of land mines after war. .
To effectively support victims, the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center is coordinating with member states to implement the project “Improving the effectiveness of victim support programs in developing countries.” The project is funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund, implemented in January 2021, and expected to be completed in January 2024. This conference is one of the initial activities of the project, with the goal of establishing a base system to support landmine victims at the regional level.
At the first stage of project implementation, ARMAC focused on completing the establishment of a regional victim support network through organizing 5 national consultation conferences, 1 regional consultation conference and 1 consultation conference at the regional level. regional conference.
This conference was organized to share Vietnam’s knowledge and experience in supporting victims of landmines and explosives left after the war, making an important contribution to strengthening international integration and cooperation in the field of mine action in Vietnam, and demonstrating Vietnam’s role in participating in building ARMAC and mine action in the ASEAN region.
